4-28 pillow.jpg

A few months ago, I went on a hunt for a pillow. Not just any pillow, but the perfect pillow. For years, I’ve had four pillows. Two of them were the old-school foam kind and two were some variation of down and feather pillows. The down pillows were too squishy and the foam pillows were always too hard. The combination of them made it OK.

I looked at memory foam pillows (which smell kind of weird) and buckwheat pillows (which can be pricey) before I found the perfect pillow. A latex foam pillow. They’re natural, made from the rubber tree and apparently last as long as your car’s tires.

Mine are from JCPenney and are on sale this weekend. Buy one and get the second for $1.

Quick!
28. April 2006

4-28 luella.jpg

I was one excited puppy when Target announced they would have a rotating set of designers. Target is one of my favorite places to shop and a quick trip for laundry detergent usually ends up in $150 worth of clearance clothes and cute shoes. Luella is the first of (hopefully) many designers and the time is almost up for this line. It’s time to skulk around the clearance racks. Maybe you’ll find this oh-so-summery bag.

how to…get your call on npr
26. April 2006

I’m an avid NPR listener. It’s pretty much all NPR all the time in my car. I’ve always wondered how people manage to get through the phone lines (I assume plenty of people call in). Well, howdy do, NPR just released your guide to getting on NPR

Find out how.

I love secretaries.
26. April 2006

In honor of Karen, my office’s beloved departed administrative assistant, I post this.

4-26 secretary club.jpg
Although there’s something to be said for sleek, trim necklaces, sleek and trim does not have to mean overly-simple. Baubles and vintage inspired necklaces are my favorites. Most likely, no one else will have one that looks like it. Jennifer Perkins and her mom run Naughty Secretary Club

It’s full of vintage necklaces that are new, or just inspired. Right now they’re having a 15 percent off sale (type 111014016 in the voucher field). Who doesn’t love hand-crafted jewelry?

If you’re feeling Martha-sized, try making your own necklace. Follow this simple tutorial for a scrap-fabric necklace at Craftster

A sale!

Everyone loves sales. And Karmaloop is a clothing store with some of my favorite designers. (I’m a fan of this ultra-hip 555 Soul jacket)

Right now, if you buy one sale item and one new item at Karmaloop, you’ll get 10% off as well as free shipping.

The code? Deald

A garden of rain?
26. April 2006

4-26 rain.jpg

No, not exactly. Rain Gardens are little pieces of compressed land that help stormwater runoff. Why do you care about stormwater runoff? Because sooner or later you end up drinking it. A rain garden can save you from icky drinking water and those little mini-floods that happen in your yard after a rainstorm.

They’re a big deal up in Minneapolis and even our favorite cheap furniture store IKEA has a bunch.

Find out how to make one at Instructables

There’s plenty of info over at Kansas City’s 10,000 Rain Garden Initiative.

Gift for REAL adults
26. April 2006

It’s graduation season, and although most grads want moolah, sometimes it’s nice to give something substancial.

4-26 business card.jpg

Levenger makes a nifty business card holder. I’ve always said you know you’re successful when people are actually asking your for your card (not counting Grandma and your unemployed friend Bob). I spotted another nifty one on Popgadget from MoMA. MoMA seems to make the best gifts.

4-26 compass.jpg

Uncommon Goods has a cute wishbone necklace to wish your grad well or the compass necklace, which can help them if they’re a little lost.

In honor of Earth Day. . .
25. April 2006

I’ve been playing hippie. Sustainable clothing and such is tough to find and stylish sustainable items are in a whole other realm. Add on to that affordable, stylish sustainable goods and you’ve got a challenge.
But, you’re in luck! I found some.

4-25 bag.jpg

Did you know over 14 million plastic bags are used each year in the U.S? Myownbag makes an adorable reusable shopping bag. Better yet, it folds up into itself so you can take it with you if you suddenly find yourself in a fantastic farmer’s market.

The DivaCup is a alternative to tampons and pads for the ladies. Instead of spending $3 every month or so on the latest, best palstic applicator, invest in the DivaCup. It might be messy at first, but they last for ten years and you’re saving the Earth. I found mine at Lucky Vitamin (pssst they also carry Alba Organics, my favorite line of organic skin care). DivaCup’s web site also has a store locator function.

4-25 dropps.jpg

Remember when the little dishwasher tablets came out and we were all excited? They were so easy and premeasured! Well, now you can have the same joy out of doing laundry. Dropps are environmentally safe and pre-measured.

Everything’s got a beginning
24. April 2006

and this is ours.

The idea was that I have all this temporary obsessions, whether it be the best workout water bottle or the coolest modern floor lamp. Sometimes, these temporary obsession acutally get bought. Other times, they end up in my ever-growing bookmark list.

Here, they’ll help someone else. So welcome to All that and a. I’d hand you a bag of chips, but they’re Soy Crisps, and not everyone is so into those.
