looking for: a yoga mat bag
29. February 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I finally got up off my butt and am taking yoga classes. So, of course, this is setting me off on a path of looking for stuff for yogis.

First off if a yoga mat bag. I’d wanted one before, but I’d never taken classes, so it wasn’t really necessary. Now it is. Lugging my mat around is no fun. Most yoga mat bags are pretty boring, with a simple tube or a duffel bag type look. Some get fancier and are work bags with straps or messenger bags, but those are out of my price range.

Here are two that I do like, mostly because they multi-task. You know how I love things that multi-task.

obi mat bag

Made by TKUU is fashion defined. It’s a polyester bland fabric and can be made into a head wrap or a belt when it’s not toting around your bag. I think there are two pull ties that let you hold your mat in it. My worry is that it’s too trendy (working out is not a runway) and that it wouldn’t hold anything else. I’d like my bag to at least hold my keys.

I do love print and I could use it if my yoga phase ends.

Green blue only. $40 on sale from $60.

Get it at Wrapables.

multitasker bag

My second option is a little more earthy. The multi-tasker bag is made by Ashima.  There are two little snaps on the ends that convert the bag in to a purse for everyday use. In side are pockets for your keys, ID and such.

I like the pretty boho print (you can get flowers or fish) and the usefulness of this bag. In addition, Ashima makes these bags out of recycled cotton and indigo dyes, which aren’t as harmful as chemical dyes.

Available in sunflowers and fish. $28.50.

So which should it be?

wtf: strapless g-string
29. February 2008

strapless gstring

I hate pantylines, too, but really? Taping a piece of cloth to yourself is the solution?

Each pair comes with 12 adhesive strips and you can buy additional packs, although you might as well use some double-stick tape. I am glad to see that the manufacturer,  Shibue couture, says these aren’t supposed to replace your every day panty.

Sizes extra small to large. $32-38.

what I’m up to
28. February 2008

It’s Thursday, and high time you guys find out what has been in my head this past week.

watching: Don’t tell me who wins Project Runway. I’m about two weeks behind in my DVR.

listening: Joni Mitchell’s Blue. My good friend Jason got me a copy for my birthday and it’s been amazing.

wearing: still breaking in my Natural Comfort heels. I think they’re going tobe amazing once I stretch out the toe part a little more

wanting: some juice. seriously dehydrated lately or something.

reading: still Alias Grace. I just got The Ruins in the mail though and am waiting for some sleepless nights.

loving:  spectator ballerina flats from Forever 21. I think I need these.

casulo: a room in a box
28. February 2008

If I had a dinky apartment to furnish, I’d totally get this guy, if he ever went into production.

After Casulo was featured on Treehugger, interest blew up and I think they might produce them soon. I worry about the cost and the actual sturdiness of the materials. I love me some flat pack stuff, but it can be flimsy if done wrong.

C&B goes (more) green
27. February 2008

C&B goes more green

Crate and Barrel just announced that they are going more green than ever before.

On their Web site:

We are pleased to announce that the majority of our upholstered sofa and chair frames are now certified sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or other nonprofit organizations that oversee the conservation and responsible social and economic management of more than 150 million acres of the world’s forests. We have also taken the important step of minimizing petroleum-based foam in many of our upholstery cushions with more energy-efficient alternatives such as soy- and corn-based foam and fibers, without sacrificing an ounce of the quality or comfort that our furnishings are known for. Ross, Cayman, Azure, Lockport and Jardin are but a few of the more than 50 upholstered styles with eco-friendly construction (see “Eco-Friendly Construction” details on relevant upholstery item pages). And while green improvements are typically associated with higher costs, we are bringing these upgrades to our customers without added expense, even on our most popular Crate and Barrel “classics” that will now live with eco-friendly features.

That is pretty impressive, that’s all I have to say. Too often going green ends up costing the consumer now, which makes it hard for everyday people to incorporate more sustainable practices in their every day life. I’m glad C&B did this without hurting my pocketbook.

review: all that shine clear shine booster
27. February 2008

My hair is pretty shiny, so I’m not sure I was the best person to review this item, but I wanted to see anyway. Plus, I had an hour to kill at the store while my oil was getting changed and I had to buy something.

Paul Mitchell also makes a shine booster that can be used once a week in the shower. I was more tempted by 10 minutes once every six weeks, as is the case of Herbal Essences All That Shine Clear Shine Booster.

Easy to use

This was just like dying your hair at home. You take some stuff, put it in another bottle, shake it up and put it on your damp hair. Wait. It burns a little. Rinse it off.

To tell you the truth, I found it weird that this was like dying my hair. I always imagined deep conditioning/shine stuff to be more like leaving conditioner on for a really long time.

I have pretty short hair, so I only used about half the bottle (the stuff was colored, oddly).

So before my hair looked like this (forgive my goofy look and the slight fuzziness)

yes, I’m in my PJs

And after ( I also styled it like I usually do) my hair looked like this:

I also took the opportunity to put on make-up

Big difference? I don’t really see it. The Boy said that my hair was marginally shinier, but it really just cast a uniform glow to my hair. Not that my hair wasn’t uniformly shiny all over before, but it had some damaged patches, etc.

Let’s look up close.

mostly shinyIs this better?

I don’t know. It looks….about the same to me. Perhaps this is because my hair is already pretty healthy and shiny to begin with.

Overall

Was it worth the $8? Maybe. My hair does has a more even tone to it now than it did before. We’ll see how long it lasts.

I would probably say that this product is more worth it to someone with extremely damaged, dull hair. I think the difference might be pretty noticeable then.

color spun bikini

free people bikini

Thank goodness I never said I’d never wear tie dye again, because regardless of Free People labeling this bikini “color spun” It’s so tie dye and I love it.

It’s still snowing or icky for a lot of the country, but there’s no reason you can’t plan ahead for summer.

Sizes small to red in orange red color only. ($188)

ombre dress

ombre dress

I wish this dress came in more colors, besides the blue. I do love blue, but options, you know. It’s a pretty classic cut with the keyhole neck and simple lines.

Made by Vanitas, sizes 2-8. ($218)

no review today, just bars
26. February 2008

I’m a little wiped from taking the boy to the airport at 3 a.m. and then driving the 1.5 hours home, so I’ll get you guys back tomorrow, but until then, these wonderful things.

YouBars

You Bars. I’ve eaten Lara Bars, Powerbars and a number of other things when I’m working long hours and don’t have time to stop for a “real” meal. While they work, I’m kinda picky. I like the general feel of Lara Bars, but I wish they were less date-y. I with Powerbars had less stuff in them, etc.

Enter the You Bar. I design my own bar, with different bases, nuts, additives and treats. I get a box of 12 for $40 (custom is never cheap). I eat.
