What are we eating?

I haven’t talked a lot about what i do personally on the food front in a while and when my fabulous friend Mark (@standupkid) showed me this movie on the food industry, I thought it was time.

I won’t get on a soapbox here, but as much as I am a foodie, I think that gourmet shouldn’t mean that we’re eating gross stuff. Gourmet to me is fresh, delicious, wholesome food. I rarely, if ever, eat something from a box. If i do, it’s usually mac and cheese, a comfort food that is way too much effort to make for one.

A long time ago, I gave up red meat and dairy for the most part. I do still love a burger now and then, I enjoy bacon, and I eat cheese, cuz cheese replacements suck. But for the most part I avoid those foods because I’ve read about how the big and bad meat and dairy industry rules the world. It’s gross. I also don’t drink soda unless it’s got cane sugar or stevia in it. Corn syrup is gross.

I mean look at your food. Really look at it. Where does it come from? Who make it? How many cows went into that burger? There is no reason you shouldn’t know the answers to this stuff.

It is expensive to eat local and organic, but every step takes. I use the wonderful LOVE Delivery service here in Los Angeles, and I get a heaping box full or organic fruits and veggies every other week. It’s a step. I am going to try to make it out to a Farmer’s Market soon and im’ on a constant hunt for farm-fresh eggs (I know, in LA? but it must exist!)

So just think about it a for a minute before you go make your dinner, that is all.

book to read: your big fat boyfriend
27. February 2009

bfbcovermex

The Boy just left. He was here for two weeks and it was heaven.

Except for my diet. I’ve been trying to lose this errant 10 pounds and really just start working out again. But The Boy tends to like tasty, greasy food.

So, my weight went back up to where it was before I started watching what I eat.

Great. I really needed this ingenious book, Your Big Fat Boyfriend.

eating: lesser evil snacks
31. December 2008

12-31-lesser-evil

I got some snacks from Lesser Evil about a month ago. Like loads of kettle corn, chocolate covered popcorn and some baked potato snacks.

Yum.

I cannot stop eating the chocolate covered corn that they call “Cocoa Coal.” It’s the right amount of sweetness and seriously good. And healthy, considering it’s chocolate covered popcorn.

I was less a fan of teh baked potato sticks. They kind of pale in comparason to Baked Lays.

But the Cocoa Coal stuff, can’t stop.

Buy Lesser Evil Snacks.

Toucan Sam would definitely approve of the TUKAANI design from Lincoln Kayiwa.

It’s a chopstick like hybrid, sort of like the spring loaded chopsticks that look like clothespins to me. It would be great if you were still learning to use chopsticks and love great design.

save on food: angel food ministries
05. August 2008

As gas prices go up, so do food prices. It’s tough on pretty much everyone. Food is universal. You could maybe spend less on gas, but it’s harder to eat less, even when it’s for a diet.

Angel Food Ministries is the best thing I’ve heard of in a long time. It’s like a CSA, where you get a box of fresh veggies and other goodies from a farmer. However, Angel Food Ministries gives you a big box of food that will feed you for a month, from meats to veggies to dessert. It’ll feed a family for a week.

Each month, you get different food, all for $30. If you want more meat, you can buy an additional pack. According to the program, it’ll cost you anywhere from $42 to $78 to get the same amount of food in a grocery store.

Anybody can get food, it doesn’t matter who you are. There are no forms, no qualifications. There are centers all over the United States, just head over to the site and check it out.
