plastic bag bangles

When I first saw these, I said, “Meh, another bangle made from straw or something by villagers in another country. That’s good, but nothing groundbreaking.”

Uhm, no.

These are plastic bags, people. The ugly, gross plastic bags I am forever trying to stop using. How awesome is that?

The artist, Stephanie Huffaker, collects the plastic from freecycle and family and friends (shame on you plastic bag users! but thanks for helping Stephanie.) She uses vintage bangles for the base. Great idea.

In black, red, pink and orange. $44.

elle a belle bracelet

bracelet from elle a belle

This gold gem you see is actually a aquamarine, but it’s the rare color of Heliodor or Golden Beryl, set with other aquamarines on a gunmetal chain. It’s part of the Urban Luxe collection at Elle a Belle.

It’s a limited edition, so I’d hurry! ($42)Get it at Elle a Belle

Thanks Laurie!

turquoise bracelet at wishgiving
26. November 2007

Wishgiving turquoise bracelet

Vania e-mailed me to tell me about Wishgiving Jewelry. Wishgiving is a family affair. It was a small little operation designed to bring the Lee family’s Asian heritage into jewelry design. In time it’s grown and the Wishgiving site has a lot of Asian inspired and simply beautiful pieces. I don’t even like turquoise, but I’m extremely drawn to this bracelet with simple turquoise stones and silver accents. It’s perfect for a statement piece. ($278)

etsy: leather cuffs
10. August 2007

Generally, I sit here and cruise etsy once a week for my Friday etsy post. But I look this week and all I can think about is this post from my friend Miss Malaprop.  I must post.

Unearthed sells itself as an exotic leather accessory store. Wait. Exotic leather?  Does that mean exotic animals are dying for these pretty cuffs?

8-4-cuff.jpg

Nope. All of the leathers used are by-products from other industries, so they would be thrown away if Unearthed weren’t using them. That doesn’t mean they’re bad pieces of leather or anything. From their profile:

“Along with strict principles of style, the principle of quality is also held dear. The Koenig sisters have vowed to themselves and to their discerning buyers NEVER to use embossed leathers and imitation skins, but ONLY the exquisite real thing - straight from the earth.”

Bangles with flair
15. May 2007

5-10 bangle.jpg

Flair makes me think of Office Space, but panache seemed silly. This bangle is 14K gold filled with Carnelian. What is carnelian? I have no idea, but it looks really good with the shiny. ($24, from lulubelle)

Five easy pieces of white
11. May 2007

For me, white means summer. It means warm. It means hot, breezy weather and the beach. So, check out these five pieces of white, my top five for the next few months.

5-10 white21.jpg5-10 white4.jpg

On the left: A sweet little card case. card cases are usually so…boring, but this one is sassy. Python-like and sassy. $40, from Abas.

On the right: Eyelet is the big thing right now. I like the girly, yet office-friendly lines of this dress by Miss Me. $94, at Plasticland.

5-10 white.jpg5-10 white3jpg.jpg5-10 white5.jpg

On the left: Another dress, I know. But who wears pants when it’s hot? This gap.com exclusive dress is cotton and would be perfect for chilling on a boat. Does anyone actually do that? Maybe chilling in the backyard next to a kiddie pool. ($70)

In the middle: Vintage shoes with a cute scallop. They’re actually grey, but I think they’re light enough to be called off-white. They’re one of a kind, so hurry. ($40, at ModCloth)

On the right: This is pearl, and pearl is never dead white. And it’s not really pearl. Let me start over. This bracelet at StyleViolet is cute. I like it. Buy it for $12.

(FYI: This post is going to be submitted to the top five list of posts over at Problogger. If you blog at all, you should check Darren’s blog out. Learn more about the group writing project here.)
