When I first saw these, I said, “Meh, another bangle made from straw or something by villagers in another country. That’s good, but nothing groundbreaking.”
Uhm, no.
These are plastic bags, people. The ugly, gross plastic bags I am forever trying to stop using. How awesome is that?
The artist, Stephanie Huffaker, collects the plastic from freecycle and family and friends (shame on you plastic bag users! but thanks for helping Stephanie.) She uses vintage bangles for the base. Great idea.
In black, red, pink and orange. $44.

One of my beefs with eco-gear is that is can get overly…obvious. Those purses (however awesome) made of juice containers are a good example. Sometime you want to look good and remain covertly eco-friendly.
I’m in love with these earrings. They’re made from recycled tins and cans. I think the blue and black part is from one of those energy drinks.
Each set of earrings is one-of-a-kind. These are 2″ long. $32

From the front, this dress is pretty unassuming. Typical circle skirt with a simple bodice. But the back is where it’s at. It’s all laced up like a corset. Plus, it’s made by Earth and Sky, a LA-based sustainable company that uses organic cotton. The dress comes in black and cherry red, from sizes extra small to large.

Ecoganik is a great little brand with modern, fun clothing, made mostly of organic cotton. I like this dress because it’s casual and could be worn in a bunch of different ways: over leggings or jeans, on its own or a jacket on top. ($108)

I love potholders. They’re so cute and remind me of grandmothers for some reason. So it would only make sense that I spotted this potholder rug at BTC Elements, which has a decent home section in addition to great green wearables. These rugs are made of reclaimed fabric and come in a ton of great colors. ($75)

I love that this isn’t cropped in a trashy way, and that this hoodie buttons instead of zips. Plus, it’s made of organic cotton. ($164)

I have absolutely no use for this dress, but someone might. It’s the perfect evening gown for something fancy during summer and it’s made out of 99 percent bamboo. It might even work for more casual occasions if you dress it down. ($194)

Indiginous Designs’ short-sleeve plaid shirt is made of organic cotton bought from coops in Portugal. The workers there are fair trade. The shirt looks like something you’d find at American Eagle, but you can feel so much better about buying it. ($58)

One-piece swimsuits get dissed a lot. They can be way less fun than bikinis, but some are great. Take, for example, this BTC suit. It’s got a sweetheart neckline and will definitely make you look sexy. If it’s not enough support, it comes with a strap for your neck. ($154)
