I made a list earlier with five things I splurge on, so I thought I’d round it out and finish it off with five more.

American Apparel skirt

1. “The perfect black pants”

I know it’s kind of a given. Everyone will say invest in black pants that fit like a dream. What I really mean is a good staple piece. I like my black pants ,but my staple really is a American Apparel pencil skirt. I own three and I’m in love with all of them. It’s a signature to my look and people know that.

Find your staple, whether it’s black pants or a neon green parachute pants. It needs to be something that says a lot about your style and about you.

2. a pedicure

I don’t actually spend a ton on these, but the point is to give yourself a treat once in a while. Something you probably shouldn’t be spending money on. A massage, a pedicure, a good cup of coffee.

It’s good for your psyche to have a bit of expensive happiness now and then. I got myself a $40 pedicure this weekend and I feel so much happier looking at my pretty toes.

3. A classic coat

Trench coats are not for everyone and neither are pea coats, but there are lots of classic silhouettes. Coats are my soft spot. I love jackets and coats because they are the first thing people see.

Your outfit may be sweatpants and a old tee, but if you’ve got a great jacket on top, people will notice.

4. Good tweezers

Not something I usually see on lists, but I somehow spent the early years of my grooming life with a terrible pair of LaCrosse tweezers I bought for $5. They were terrible and I’d pull out more skin than eyebrow hair.

Then came my higher grade revlon tweezer. My, they were “expensive” at $11 or something like that, but they’re sharpened for a lifetime, like Tweezermans. They grab each and every hair…it’s a dream.

5. Good sheets

You spend eight hours a day rolling around in these things, why subject yourself to 100-threadcount? Get yourself some nice sheets, friends.

Good sleep is the basis to looking and feeling good, I don’t know how many studies have told us so. They don’t need to be the best out there, but something that is soft, comfortable and will last your for years.

need: knit coat
25. October 2007

I don’t really need one, but fall in California is not quite fall in the Midwest. So, I need a light jacket. Some options: what do you think?

10-20-coat.jpeg

I like this quilted bomber from Urban Outfitters. It’s also probably the cheapest of the set. ($54)

10-20-grey-ant-coat.jpg

Grey Ant is always cute and I like the scarf dealie on this grey jacket, but it’s only good for weather where you want a scarf, I think. ($99)

10-20-jacket.jpg

A green option, which is something I’m trying to do more of. Stewart+Brown makes this organic cotton blazer which looks like the perfect mix of blazer and knit that I’ve been looking for. ($141)

10-20-origami-jacket.jpg

It’s so beautiful I couldn’t include this jacket. it’s origami inspired and the collar is…breathtaking. It’s also made of organic cotton. ($198)

10-9-coat.jpg

I don’t have a plaid coat. They’re all plain so, like, you know, I totally need a plaid coat. I mean it does cost a lot, but all women need a great plaid coat, right? Am I right? ($480)

Lying in the trenches

2-21 trench2.jpg

Spring is almost here and to me, that means jackets. Fun cute jackets. This weekend, I managed to procure a gorgeous navy blue INC trench coat like the one above, which will be my second. My first I inherited from my mother and is a lovely raspberry color. Trenches are classics, for men and women. Grab one of these:

BCBG’s updated trench. The cropped look and voluminous sleeves are very fresh. ($278)

A classic, from Spiegel. I like the pockets on this one. ($69)

Ah, fall.
29. August 2006

8-30 fall looks.jpg

I love fall. Pretty leaves and my favorite thing of all, coats. Oh, yes, even though I’ve moved to California I will be buying coats. I particularly like the fall clothing Newport News has set out.

This coat is sleek, and sexy ($59). It’s got this 3/4 sleeve flared arms and is perfectly cropped.

Maybe I’ll wear it with this Little Black Dress ($39). It’s not like I have three others sitting in my closet.

And who doesn’t need a new pencil skirt? ($29)

Oh and shoes! Fall dictates that you wear some ankle-boots like these ($39) or some flat peep-toes in a metallic color ($24)
