project: make your own swiffer

this is hwat your swiffer will look like

I’ve long been grossed out by the amount of product and waste I use when I Swiffer. It’s just so convenient, I don’t know how to stop (that and I’ve got a Costco-size box to go through).

I’ve told myself that when I’m done with this box I’ll go out and buy one of those method thingies and make my own Swiffer juice, but then today I came across this great idea at Curbly.

Make your own reusable Swiffer.

OK, I can do that. Some old sweatshirts or new fleece and we’re good to go. But can I use it wet?

Go to the project.

Making a picture rail
03. May 2007

I’ve been thinking about installing a picture rail or ledge in my apartment. My roommate is a photographer and has a ton of prints and I have a big collection of art, but neither of us are willing to commit to the cost of framing art, which can get real expensive, real fast. So some mats and picture rails seem like a good idea. But should I really spend however much on a pre-made rail?

Or should I make one, not out of the typical moulding you see on home design shows, but some angle iron?

A dress for you

In a day or two, there will be a post on Shelterrific about a personal experiment I’ve embarked on. I’m not going to elaborate much, but it’s going to involve me changing a lot of things.

My roommate has a sewing machine and I’m going to need ot learn to use it. I’ve been obsessed with multi-use clothing lately, like this dress on Etsy. But it’s an easy process.

Check out this post from Rostitchery. It’s one seam! I can do that. It’s the dress pictured above.

A bag here, a bag there…

In my house, they’re everywhere. I even stopped getting plastic grocery bags, but still, they’re everywhere.

There’s some fancy bag-keeper devices out there, but do you really need to pay $10-20 for a place to put bags? Really? How about oyu make your own, like DIY Maven on Curbly did

Anyone out there a wino?

If so, you can join Carlo Rossi in building wine jug furniture. I’m fond of the chandelier, which takes 33 jugs, or the TV stand, which takes a mere three jugs. The site comes complete with build specs and video

Real quick-like
14. July 2006

I’ve been looking into the Oil Cleansing Method. Is anyone out there doing this? I’ve got some Trader Joe’s Olive oil at home just waiting to be tested.

Until then however, I found this nifty recipe for home-made biore pore strips. Much cheaper.

Apparently, I’m on a make-your-own-bags kick. Whipup has a simple, easy tutorial to make a cute bag out of last year’s ugly sweater.

My to-do list
23. May 2006

I’m an aspiring crafter. That means I’m not so good at it, but I try. That’s what counts, right? These are on my to-craft list.

Laptop bag that matches this $80-100 felt bag.

A scrabble message board with my some-of-the-letters-are-missing-but-it’s-more-fun Scrabble game.

Cat toys that profess my love for sushi.

Easy wall art with all those jewel cases I have laying around

Organize my closet finally. (OK, that’s not a craft, but it sure is one heck of a task)

Paint chip wall art using the beginning steps of this paint chip wallet.

Man, I got a lot of work to do. I also have two canvases that remain unpainted because i have no inspiration and am a horrid artist.
